I went to Yi Gi Dae for a hike! There is a coastal trail that takes you along rocks and crags and if/when you make it to the end, you see "5 or 6 Islands." It goes by that name because depending on the weather and the tide, you see either 5 or 6 islands!!! CLEVER!!!

The markets around Daegu are full of fresh and open bin seafood, meat and beautiful seeds, beans, seasonings and so on! I never fail to take a picture of these booths when I visit the market! The colors grab me everytime!

I had an amazing opportunity to spend the night at an obervatory school in South Korea. Once the sun went down we looked at stars, saw the rings around Saturn and this GEM!! The moon! I had a great time and know it was probably a once in a lifetime opportunity!

There is a beautiful temple rather close to where I live. It is a multi-story building, rather large, crammed onto a street. It is at the literal end of a rather busy road. It is adorned with Buddhas and gods around the outside and on top of the building is a huge golden Buddha that glistens and glows in the light of day. I can see his back for my entire walk to work; one day I decided I would find this place. After a long walk I crossed the street and happened to look back and see the building, although he was blocked by one of the other tall buildings surrounding him.

As I came closer I found an outdoor meditation area and two side entrances to the main hall. They had a bookstore, a dining area, some honor system snack carts and stairs leading up on both sides. I stayed on the main floor and looked around! Luckily I am well versed in honoring many faiths and knew to take my shoes off outside. This did however leave me with chilie little toes. I had not packed socks or flip flops... things to remember in future explorations.

It was beautiful inside and busy with a large group leaving after meditation. I, as short as I am, stood a good head taller than most of the crowd and all of the little old ladies smiled and fawned over me! As I came out of the temple building there was a cute little huddle of women; they proceeded to talk to me and "practice English" as we walked to the intersection!

This is seafood and other market finds!!

Dry fish

Wet fish! Well, clams, muscles, weird things, more weird things, squid and octopus! This kind of made me wish that I ate more types of seafood... but I have just never even wanted to try, just looking at them makes my mouth water in one of those, "ewwww. please don't put that in me. toooooo slimy, might puke" king of ways-that's my mouth talking!

There are a ton more where these came from... I took pictures of everything! And can't wait to share some more of the more interesting images with you!

The Food at the Markets/ Multi Part/ Trusty Photography/ Travel Photography

I was expecting stranger smells at the market; please don't read that as a complaint! Sometimes I can be ill from the crazy mix of food smells meandering and mixing together in the still air of markets. Surprisingly, it is lacking for the most part, minus the few fish or sea food areas and the random cloud of pork steam one stumbles through.

As you see here, Koreans use as much of the animal as they can, much like my experience with Native Americans in Alaska. I am unfamiliar with this tradition, growing up as a good ol' American girl from the South, North, Rockies, Europe... wait, actually, now that I think about it, I am not sure how I avoided dietary treats like-liver, gizzards, eyes, hearts, intestines, tongue, feet....

But I am quite ok with my limited culinary upbringing when I start to list out edible body parts like that! Here you can find every part of the innerworking of the chickens, whose empty bodies lay right next "door."

I will admit, even thought I took Human Anatomy and Physiolgy, once I was staring at everything lying on the table I had to ask my friend "T" to go over the body parts with me so that I could fully understand what they eat...

Our friend, "K" wouldn't come down this food aisle, as the start of it had this display on our left and the live animals on the right- rabbits, chicken, dog, cat... for the furry/feather creatures and eels, fish, urchin things and so on for the water creatures.

And for those that like to work a little for their meat, they can still take the full animal home, here a pheasant, and clean it themself!!!

There is a lot more character the markets here, than I experienced in Italy. I am not sure what it is except that every neighborhood has it's own market and then the city has a couple of really large markets. So there is none of that, "Oh I missed that vendor when they were in Vicenza I need to head to such and such town to catch this this weekend."

Also, the market is the market, everyday. You don't have to wait for Thursday to head downtown; you just go, on a walk, in almost any direction and you will find a market.

It is fascinating to see all that they offer at the market. Clearly there are the animal vendors, the vegetable vendors, the sea creatures, boiled worms, cloth, jars and sock vendors... but the actual people are much more entertaining! Some are friendly and smile and are interested in pictures and others shoo you away like a bothersome fly! But over all, the market has yet to fail me in inspiring a number of picturesque moments, items and people!
